The Super Eagles rose two places to ninth at the expense of Spain and creating a significant gulf between them and their next Cup qualifying opponents Uganda.

Uganda, who face Nigeria on March 23 in Lagos next year, are presently level with Guatemala in the 102nd position.

The cup tie in Lagos will however be without either side's top marksman. Cranes's Geoffrey Massa and opposite number Yakubu Ayigbeni are suspended for the game.

Uganda are second in Group Three of the qualifying campaign with four points, two behind leaders Nigeria with six points.

Group winners qualify automatically for Ghana where they will be joined by the top three runners-up from the groups made up of four teams.

Niger rose from 149 to 148th while Lesotho sunk two places below to 160th place.

Nigeria consequently remains Africa's finest soccer nation, ahead of second placed Cameroon placed 11th in the rankings.

Against all expectations, the Nigerians, who had won over majority of the fans at the Copacabana beach, Rio De

Janeiro, venue of the championship, following their superior displays against Argentina a couple of days earlier, saw themselves struggling against the less fancied Italians and were 1-3 down with seven minutes of the match remaining.

They, however, turned the game on its head when Man-of- the Match, “lsiaka Olawale scored with two identical headers to pull the Nigerian team level.

Then, with all thinking that the game would go into extra time, Ifeanyi Onigbo’s innocuous shot sailed through the legs of the goalkeeper to give Nigeria the fourth and winning goal.

With the victory, Nigeria brightened their chances of making it into the quarter/finals of the competition as they now have three points though still remain third in the four-team Group D log of the competition.

Nigeria had narrowly lost 4-5 to Argentina on Thursday and will face surprise team tomorrow , Bahrain, in their last first-round game .

Olawale Ajimotokan
Lagos

The Ghana 2008 qualifying race between the Super Eagles and Cranes of Uganda has assumed a new twist following allegation of unsportsmanly conduct levelled against Nigeria by the East African country.

The Ugandan sour grape is the fall out of the Group 3 fixture with Niger played over the weekend. The match played at the Stade Seyni Kountche Stadium in Niamey ended 0-0.

The ill tempered game saw four Ugandan players being shown yellow cards by the Senegalese referee Abdaul Diouf. CAF has also slammed a $5, 000 fine on the Federation of Ugandan Football Association (FUFA) for the bad conduct of the Cranes' players.

Reports in the Ugandan media yesterday ascribed to the FUFA officials accused Nigerian officials of influencing the outcome of the match by bankrolling the Nigerien campaign.

Quoting an unnamed insider, the New Vision newspaper wrote that a 'friendly' country funded Niger's entire preparations. Niger was given a single assignment: 'Whatever it takes or costs, beat Uganda.'

It is logical that Nigeria, which shares common geographical and political ties with Niger is the country indirectly regarded as the 'friendly' nation that funded the Mena of Niger's last fixture against the Cranes.

FUFA accused Nigeria of sparking a grand West African conspiracy to foil their ambition to secure qualification for the Nations Cup, which incidentally they last graced in 1978 in Ghana.

Geoffrey Massa and team captain Timothy Batabaire were among the players booked against the Mena. Massa will now not be eligible for the match against Nigeria next March having incurred two bookings.

"We must work hard against Nigeria in Abuja to stop this West African refereeing conspiracy," he observed.

However, the report did not say if any formal protest had been lodged with CAF over the conduct of the referee or the suspicions by Ugandan officials that Nigeria influenced the match.

Apart from the allegation of suspicious dealings, the stakes between Nigeria and Uganda will be high when the Ugandans visit Abuja on March 24 next year in continuation of the series considering that it was the Cranes that defeated Nigeria in the semi-final stage of Ghana 1978 with the ammunition supplied by Philip Omondi, the tournament leading scorer.

They were, however, beaten 2-0 in the final by Ghana led by golden boy Abbdul Razak.

The Super Eagles presently lead Group 3 with the maximum six points from two matches from their victories over Niger and Lesotho.

This Day.

The decision by the 13-member executive committee of Caf was unanimous, giving teeth to speculation that the hosting right had actually been decided at the committee's meeting in Cairo in January, before the start of the African Nations Cup finals.

Nigeria made a strong case for hosting, hinging its bid on the fact that the country would be celebrating 50 years of independence that year. Angola was also thought to be behind because the country would construct four new venues, but the Bid Committee secured government guarantees that the facilities would be ready.

In an unprecedented move, Caf awarded the rights for the three CAN finals at one sitting, handing the 2012 event to the joint bid by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea and the 2014 finals to Libya. To ensure that none of the four nations in the final vote lost out, Nigeria would be backed to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2009, and would also be 'super sub' for any of the three hosts that fails the requirement hurdle.

It was the third time in 14 months that Angola would make short work of Nigeria in international sport. Last year summer, the Angolan basketball team beat Nigeria's D'Tigers 67-62 in the semi finals of the African Championship in Algeria, and in October, the Palancas Negras piped the Super Eagles to the football World Cup ticket.

"We know we have a lot of work on hand and we'll move in immediately to start the assignment," said Angola Sports Minister Marcos Barrica. He added that the organizing committee would be constituted this month, a whole 38 months ahead of schedule.

The 2010 Nations Cup assumed immense significance after FIFA awarded the hosting right of the football World Cup of the same year to Africa. South Africa will stage the global finals six months after Angola must have hosted Africa.

"We are aware of the responsibility and we'll do everything that we have to do, accomplish every task that we have to accomplish, in order to do Africa proud," said Angola FA's Justino Fernandez.

"Your performance at the African championship was expected based on your track record and I am optimistic that you will make Nigeria proud in the world championship," he said.

Ka'oje said while receiving trophies won by the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) at the just concluded African Scrabble Championship in Abuja that Nigerians were not surprised at the feat.

He said the country's victory at the championship was a pointer to the federation's seriousness and determination to use sports in laundering the country's image.

Ka'oje commended the players who brought the laurels, saying that they made Nigeria proud in spite of the "little support" received from the Sports Ministry.

Nigeria carted away trophies for the first to fifth positions, thereby emerging the best country among the five that battled for honors at the continental event including Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, Kenya and the host Nigeria.

According to NSF President Toke Aka, Nigerian players made greater efforts to retain the championship they won two years ago in the last edition.

"The championship featured the best players in Africa and those who came to Abuja believed that Nigeria was the team to beat," he said, adding "many of them actually played in the world championship and thought that they could conquer us but Nigeria eventually conquered Africa."

Nigeria was seeking to organize the tournament for the third time after previously hosting in 1980 and as co-host in 2000.

But as a form of consolation, CAF has promised to support Nigeria?s bid to host the World U-17 Championship in 2009, which FIFA has already allocated to Africa. The country also stands a chance to host the Nations Cup in 2012 or 2014 if any of the countries awarded the rights fail to meet up.

In summary, the CAF Executive Committee unanimously awarded hosting rights of subsequent Nations Cup tournaments in the following order:

2010 ? ANGOLA
2012 ? GABON/EQUATORIAL GUINEA
2014 ?LIBYA

Nigerian coach Austin Eguavoen has revealed he has not received his salary for the last nine months.

The former international defender, who led the Super Eagles to a 2-0 win over Niger in Saturday's Nations Cup qualifier in Abuja, said his assistants have also been working without pay for the same period.

"We've already worked for nine months but we haven't been paid a penny and no one is saying anything about that," said an angry Eguavoen.

"Not only could the Nigeria FA (NFA) not pay me, but they have been making it difficult for me to work with total concentration.

"It's a pity that all we get are promises without action," he told BBC Sport on Monday.

Eguavoen, who led Nigeria to third place at the last Nations Cup finals, said the NFA should resolve his situation before opting to recruit a foreign coach.

Sports minister Bello Kao'je ordered the NFA to begin their search for a new national coach on Wednesday.

"I have no problem if the sports minister asked for a foreign coach. I am not even worried because the job is all about hiring and firing," Eguavoen claimed.

"But I am wondering if a foreign coach can put himself through all these problems that I have faced this year alone.

"Yet, people are talking about a foreign coach. If that is what they want, fine. But I doubt if a foreign manager can work without pay for just two months.

"It's not a nice situation, but if they want a foreign manager it should be done with credibility and integrity."

The NFA, which receives its funding from the sports ministry, has acknowledged the debts owed to the national team coaches.

But it is yet to come up with a plan on how to settle the arrears.

It was the striker's first appearance for his country since September last year, when he fell out with coach Austin Eguavoen.

And Udinese midfielder Christian Obodo made sure of the points midway through the second half, pouncing in the 60th minute.

The result is a positive start to the Nations Cup campaign for Nigeria, who missed out on the 2006 World Cup following a number of surprising reverses in qualifying.

However, Uganda's 3-0 win over Lesotho earlier in the day means Nigeria are only second in the group after the opening round of matches.

The South Americans needed a stoppage time strike by Adriane to settle the thrilling encounter at Moscow's Torpedo Stadium.

The Nigerians, cheered on by a noisy and colourful contingent, dominated the early exchanges but failed to convert their chances.

The Falconets paid for their profligacy seconds before the break with Fabiana losing her marker after a corner kick, to head the opener past Tochukwu Oluehi.

The Africans came back from the break and dominated possession with playmaker Cynthia Uwak tormenting the Brazilian defence.

Uwak was on hand to draw the Falconets in the 80th minute after angling a low side-footed shot into the far corner.

The South American rallied and gained their composure in extra-time forcing Oluehi to receive the red-card after fouling the advancing Fabiana.

Adriane converted the resulting free-kick after it came off the crossbar to set the Brazilians on course for a semi-final spot.

The Middlesbrough striker stayed away from the Nations Cup in Egypt earlier this year, where Nigeria finished third.

There was also a comeback for Wolverhampton midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, who missed the Nations Cup, because of a serious back injury.

The dashing winger, who failed to break into the senior national team, played alongside such names like Wilson Oruma, Celestine Babayaro and Nwankwo Kanu in the victorious Japan'93 squad

The team was on its way to Kano to honour its league tie with BON FC when the incident occurred.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident, which happened at Gubu Dam just 14 km away from Bauchi, was caused when the front tie of the bus conveying the team for the 2pm fixture burst.

There were 16 players and three officials in the bus when the accident happened.

The club's Team Manager Idris Abduulahi who broke the sad news yesterday, said the players have since been buried in accordance with Muslim rites.

The names of the dead players include Adamu Bebeto, Ubale Maidawa, Murtala Zakari and Jibrin Abdullahi. Two others died later in hospital.

Meanwhile, in response to the tragic incident, the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has suspended all matches involving teams from Bauchi State indefinitely.

Acting FA. Fanny Amun, who made scribe, announcement yesterday, said that the postponement is to allow the state FA recover from the unfortunate incident.

And in a related development the state's FA chairman, Mallam Aminu Maigari, has announced a 10-day mourning period.

Meanwhile, the management of Lobi Stars FC is under-fire for under performance and is likely to be changed any moment from now.

Deputy Governor of Benue State, Ajene Ogiri told reporters yesterday in Abuja that despite good funding that the club has enjoyed from the state government, it has failed to deliver.

He was particularly angry that neither the club's local appearance in the Globacom League nor it's continental outing has been inspiring.

"Lobi is well funded more than the Super Eagles yet we have not seen any good result to show for the investment," said the Deputy Governor.

He, however, assured that something drastic would be carried out soon to turn around the fortunes of the club presently led by former Super Eagles player, Dominic Iorfa.

Lobi along with Heartland FC of Owerri were bundled out of the qualifying round of the CAF Confederations Cup.

Obasanjo was speaking when he received in audience Chairman of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Bid Committee Ronald Walker in the capital Abuja.

"Considering the facilities on ground and what we are preparing, Nigeria will be able to host the over 75 countries expected to participate in the 2014 Games," he said.

While thanking Walker for agreeing to support Nigeria's bid, Obasanjo said Nigeria would greatly benefit from Australia's experience in hosting the Games by depending mainly on private sector finance.

Obasanjo, who noted that 2014 was significant for Nigeria as it would commemorate the centenary anniversary of the country's amalgamation, expressed federal government's determination to win the bid and become the first African host of the Commonwealth Games.

The president also indicated Nigeria's desire to replicate Australia's National Sports Institute where sportsmen and women successfully combine academic and sports in training all year round.

Walker congratulated Obasanjo for making a powerful speech during the 2005 Malta Commonwealth Summit in favor of Nigeria's bid.

He said the games in which one-third of the world's population were represented, always provided the host country with the opportunity to present itself to the entire world.

Walker stressed the crucial roles of private sector funds in making a good bid presentation, and pledged Australia's support for Nigeria's bid.
