Many Skype alternatives exist now...

1__ Google talk

2__ Tinychat

3__ Viber

4__ Goober

5__ VoxOx

6__ Google+ Hangouts

7__ Google voice

8__ ooVoo

BTW, Microsoft's paid a whopping US$ 8.5 billion to purchase Skype. Since microsoft took over skype I have had nothing but problems. When doing text chat, delivery is delayed sometimes by minutes. Also, computer-to-phone calls are more expensive now.

I often chat with people in Nigeria over Skype, Gtalk, Messenger, etc.

The experience has generally been underwhelming. Internet connection has generally been slow, and chat sessions are a torture more often than not, with incessant loss of connectivity. These people I chat with are in the nation's capital city, Abuja.

These people pay for a data service, where you purchase a modem for your laptop, and can then chat from home or from any place within the mobile network's coverage area.

In the past few days, somebody else had a chat with me, where the audio quality was impeccable. We had hour-long chat without a single interruption in the connection.

To push the envelope a bit, I decided to do a conference call, with another friend in London. So we had one person in Ilorin, one in London, and myself in the USA, all on the same call. The conference call lasted for over 30 minutes without the person in Ilorin experiencing any issues, signing off only when the laptop battery charge became low.

So, I was curious to know how come chatting from Abuja is such a headache, but very good from Ilorin. I was made to understand that the Internet connection from Ilorin is 3G.

If 3G is the answer to our connectivity woes, then that is what the entire country ought to be on. Perhaps it's timely that Nigeria just fined Airtel, Etisalat, Globacom, and MTN a combined $7.UNTG2G2.htm

The service these companies provide is sub-par at best. An improvement is needed immediately. If the rest of the world has moved on to 4G LTE, no part of Nigeria should still be on dinosaur 2G.

BTW, if you want information about how to browse the Internet on your phone, see this article: viewtopic.php?t=3341

I am still waiting for the good things that president Jonathan promised. So far, he has only managed to make life more difficult for everybody.

All Nigerians, except for the leaders who share Nigeria's oil money among themselves, are feeling the severe economic pinch.

Recently, I had to install an inverter to save me the cost of buying petrol on a weekly basis at the rate of N liters. Though, the cost of the initial installation was a bit on the high side, but the long time benefit is what I stand to enjoy[/b]

You are wise to setup an inverter system. The site admin has a comprehensive tutorial on how to set it up http://www.nairaland.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2854

Maybe you should share your own experience, and how much it cost in total.

I believe that if one considers the cost of a generator, and the cost of petrol, an inverter system is actually cheaper.

You are correct. However, this post is meant primarily for Nigerians abroad who call Nigeria frequently. Or Nigerians at home who call people abroad.

It's safe to assume that anybody who ordinarily can make an International phone call, can surely afford to own a used laptop, since International phone calls aren't exactly cheap.

If you don't own a computer, you can use any Internet cafe that has Skype installed. The only thing with an Internet cafe is that your call may not be so private, since people can hear you.

In addition to a computer, you would need a headset.

You can purchase a headset for as little as $5. See http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE

Free phone calls can be done using Skype.

Skype is a software that emulates a phone. Such programs are termed Voice over IP (VoIP). Basically, it's a computer-to-computer call.

Here is how...

1. Download Skype from http://www.skype.com/
2. Install it.
3. Tell the people you want to call to also install skype.
4. You add your friends to your list, and they add you to theirs.
5. Now watch a video of how to make a Skype call.

object

As the video shows, not only can you talk to people, you can also see them. For that, you need to have a webcam on your computer. The price of Web cams start from about $10. See http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... rder=PRICE

So what are you waiting for? With used laptops selling for as little as $150 these days, there's no reason not to own one.

STOCKHOLM, April 8 -- Rebtel, the people's global communications company, today slashed in half its rates to Nigeria so Nigerians living abroad can call their loved ones at home for just 9.9 cents per minute.

"It's the best of all the networks I have ever tried," said Daniel Mejabi, an English teacher at Lanzhou Jiatong University, in Beijing. Added Harmony Home, a Nigerian entrepreneur in New York City: "I love Rebtel. It's genuine, and a real value for the money. Rebtel doesn't charge when the line is busy nor when there's no answer. Other phone companies do. Long live Rebtel!"

There is no charge to set up a Rebtel account. No monthly fees, no connection fees and no hidden costs. And, all new Rebtel customers who use the voucher code NigeriaApril when they sign up this month and purchase at least $10 of calling time will receive 30 minutes of free calls to Nigeria.

To try Rebtel for free go to http://www.rebtel.com/CallNigeria

Who is Rebtel?

Not yet 3 years old, Rebtel was started by serial entrepreneur Hjalmar Winbladh, his business partner Jonas Lindroth, and 14 like-minded rebels who began work with a unified mission: take the phony out of mobile telephony, and create the first genuinely good, honest, and trustworthy global mobile telecommunications service that saves people money. With Rebtel, they promised, there would be no hidden clauses. No small print. No secret charges.

Rebtel's technology vision was equally straightforward: Shrink the world, make it a friendlier place, and bring people worldwide closer together by making all phone calls local.

How Rebtel works

Rebtel gives people local phone numbers in the country where they live that connect them directly with their friends, family or work colleagues who live abroad.

That means, for example, Rebtel gives someone living in Texas a local Texas phone number that connects them directly to their friend or family member in Nigeria.

There's no access number to dial, no PIN to remember, or long international phone number to enter. The person in Texas only dials a local Texas phone number and Rebtel connects the call over the Internet to their contact in Nigeria.

This concept of making all calls local was invented by Rebtel - something never done before. And when the world heard about Rebtel on May 17, 2006 at the Innovate Europe conference in Zaragoza, Spain it was named one of Europe's top three new startups, and received acclaim from leading business and technology press all over the world.

"The beauty of Rebtel's service is it was designed from the start to be used with any mobile phone - even the most simple, cheap phone - without modification, software downloads or changes to the calling plan you already have with your cell phone provider," said Winbladh.

Today, Rebtel is available in more than 50 countries around the world, and is doubling in size every three months.

"People can spend hours surfing the web to save a few dollars on an airline flight, but for some reason they've given up on the idea that they can be just as smart when it comes to making phone calls," said Winbladh. "People are spending hundreds of billions of dollars calling abroad, roaming and sending SMS with their mobiles. Yet, there's something they can do for a fraction of the price, without changing their phone or carrier, and start saving real money."

Getting started with Rebtel is fast, easy and free

1. Go to http://www.rebtel.com/CallNigeria and enter your number and a friend's number in Nigeria.
2. Rebtel creates a local number where you live that you can use from any phone, anywhere.
3. Save the number in your address book and use it any time. It's yours forever.

"We believe our service is the future of international calling," said Winbladh. "It's easy to use, has great call quality, and above all it offers serious savings for ordinary people. There's no smarter, easier way to make low-cost international calls on your mobile phone than Rebtel."

About Rebtel

Rebtel is a global calling service for individuals and business. With Rebtel it's possible to call any phone, anywhere in the world, for just pennies per minute. Rebtel's services can be used with any mobile phone without modification or software downloads. There is no charge to set up a Rebtel account. No monthly fees, no connection fees and no hidden costs. CELTEL International has fully taken over control of Nigeria's Vmobile and re-branded it into its famous red and yellow logo along with its brand promise of 'Making Life Better.'

In a press statement issued recently, the Celtel International Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Marten Pieters, said Nigeria is a very important market for any serious telecommunications operator in the world.

"Celtel has taken Nigeria seriously right from the days of the license auction. We also tried to acquire Nitel, when it was up for sale, but the more attractive option of buying into Vmobile proved too tantalising to be ignored," he said.

Celtel's success in Nigeria underscores the increasing competition among telecom players on the continent for more visibility and business as Africa continues to take leaps into the cyber world.

Re-branding Vmobile, the first mobile network to launch commercial services in Nigeria, follows the acquisition of a controlling stake in the company by Celtel.

The deal, worth $1.005 billion (Shs1.8 trillion), was concluded in May 2006. Officials said the Group plans to do an extensive rollout of the Celtel brand in Nigeria, with investments already hitting more than $700 million (Shs1.2 trillion) being spent to improve network coverage through the erection of 1,000 new base stations and bringing the latest mobile network products to our customers.

Celtel offers telecommunications services with mobile licenses covering more than 400 million people, close to half of Africa's population.

Celtel International is owned by MTC, a leading provider of mobile telecommunications in the Middle East and Africa.

It has more than 15 million customers and operates mobile cellular operations in 14 countries. These include Burkina Faso, Chad, DR Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia among others.

UK users account for 65% of Wap traffic - and international usage for 35%.

In most African nations, there are more mobile phones than computers, and wireless connections are often more reliable than the landlines.

The BBC says that it receives regular messages of thanks from people in Africa, who say the only access they have to news is via their mobiles. "I'm in Uganda and the only access I have 2 the outside world is this pinhole 2 info cause I don't have access to TV. Thanx," said one texter from Uganda. The country accounted for 7% of BBC WAP usage in July.
