Nigeria should emulate international educational laws

The fallen standard of education in Nigeria is a worrisome situation to both the government and the academic. Indeed, the government has in the recent past come up with various educational policies and laws aimed at bettering our educational system.

It is an obvious fact that our educational sector is bedevilled by numerous problems arising from lack of firm educational laws. Touched by this situation, Dr. Andrew Efemini, chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIPORT branch, told The Weekend Tide that federal government should shore up our educational system by looking at the international laws or standards of universities across the world.

The university don noted that the consistency with international laws on education will not only produce good policy makers in the country but will breed future political situation that promises to bequeath the best to the country’s generations to come.

Dr. Efemini who spoke to The Weekend Tide in his office in Port Harcourt disclosed that until the government sees the education sector as a major part of a cherished system of government, it is bound to renege from the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

On the issue of university autonomy, Dr. Efemini explained that the government should first consider the enormous responsibility of the institutions and relinquish stronghold on the schools to enable it dispense their duties effectively. This, he said, would provide the required manpower development need for the growth of the nation, decrying the decay in the system because of overburden and high handedness on the part of the government.

“ASUU believes constructive appraisal of government policies is part of government while, expecting a change of attitude from the operators of the system. We are an integral part of democracy and we are not ready to compromise or abdicate our position for the unity of the country, especially in the present case involving our colleagues at the University of Ilorin. Is there any reason why, after wining the authority at the Ilorin High Court, the Federal Government should go to the Appeal Court to protest illegality? he queried.

He said that the government should deviate from pursuing mundane policies and concern itself with issues about the growth of the universities as set out by international regulations which allows for competitions.

“Let me tell you that in Nigeria today, everybody believes that the University of Ibadan is the best school in the country but I want to tell you that it is not so because others are also doing well in terms of academic. This is part of our grouse in ASUU, and it is not as if the authorities are not aware of this situation. They are aware, so what are we talking about?

He said that it was high time the government see Nigerian universities as the moulder of its political future and not an enemy. It should be seen as a partner in progress since those who are governors today were taught by us.

Dr. Efemini told us that no country would succeed if it’s programmes were not fine-tuned for the benefit of the citizenry.

In his words: “The federal government should be consistent with international norms and observe employer and employee relationship approach to all issues that affect university staff in the country.
