IBADAN, Nigeria -- A truck hauling iron rods lost control and crashed into several roadside buses as passengers were boarding in southwestern Nigeria, killing at least 30 people, police said Tuesday.
The accident occurred Monday on the outskirts of the city of Ibadan, some 60 miles north of the country's capital Lagos, said police commissioner Jonathan Johnson.
The truck slammed into a busy stop where minibuses were loading passengers and street traders sold their wares.
"We've counted 30 people killed including passengers and traders," Johnson said.
Road accidents claiming large numbers of lives are frequent in Africa's most populous country, which depends heavily on poorly maintained highways and vehicles for the movement of people and goods.
